1. Get this from your utility company even when you do not have solar panels on your rooftop. With the TOU meter, the utility company is charging you different rates for different times of the day.
2. In the daytime during summer they charge the most. If your house is unoccupied during the daytime, you will be selling electricity to your utility company at that super high rate and getting billed at the lower evening and weekend rates.
3. You can go one step ahead and make our planet green by purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) car. Once you get an EV, call your utility company and request them to put you on another plan which is even better. It is called TOU-EV billing.
These provide you with even lower rates from midnight to 6am. So you can charge your car, and also run your major appliances on delay start during off peak hours.
4. As an example, refer to the table below showing Southern California Edison rates as of 2013. During the day, when most people are at work, you generate and sell electricity during at 52 cents per kWh, and consume mostly during off-peak hours at 10 cents per kWh.
