What to Do If Your SMA Monitoring System Stops Communicating

If your SMA Sunny Boy inverters no longer connect to the monitoring system at sunnyportal.com, you can take steps to reconnect your inverters and track how much power your solar panels are generating again.

What is the online monitoring for your SMA inverter system?

Sunnyportal.com allows you to find how much energy your panels took in, featuring cool graphs that track the amount of energy by the hour—the graph usually peaks in the middle of the day. If the power level doesn’t appear on the website, it doesn’t mean they stopped working—they’re still collecting solar power, they’re just not being monitored. It’s like that phrase—if a tree falls in the forest, does it really make a sound? If your power inverters collect sunlight without being monitored, do they really produce any energy? The answer, of course, is yes! However, you still probably want to view how much power your solar system is generating, so here is a step-by- step tutorial on how to do so. Among the SMA Sunny Boy inverters, you can either have a single inverter system OR multiple inverter system.

Steps to renew the connection for a single inverter system:

  1. Your inverter must be turned off. Turn the DC Disconnect knob to the OFF position. (See Image 1, Object 1)
  2. Locate the AC Disconnect and pull the lever down to the OFF position. (See Image 1, Object 2).
  3. Locate and open the Main Service Panel (MSP). Flip only the breakers with the red label “SOLAR CIRCUIT” to the OFF position. (See Image 2, Object 1)
  4. Keep the inverter, AC disconnect, and breakers off for approximately 3 minutes.
  5. After the 3 minutes have passed, repeat all of the steps above, only in reverse.
  6. Flip only the breakers with the red label “SOLAR CIRCUIT” back to the ON position. Then close the Main Service Panel. (See Image 2, Object 1)
  7. Push the lever up to the ON position, on the AC Disconnect. (See Image 1, Object 2).
  8. Turn the DC Disconnect knob to the ON position on your inverter. (See Image 1, Object 1)
  9. It might take several hours for all the information to be restored to sunnyportal.com. Please contact Aikyum Solar if above steps do not work and you are unable to resolve your SMA Inverter monitoring issue.

Steps to renew the connection for a multiple inverter system:

  1. Your inverters must be turned off. Flip the DC Disconnect for SMA Inverter #1 and SMA Inverter #2 to the OFF position. (See Image 3, Objects 3 and 4.)
  2. Locate and open the Main Service Panel (MSP), the subpanel containing the PV breakers. (See Image 3, Object 5). Flip all of the PV Breaker switches to the OFF position. (See Image 4, Object 6.)
  3. Keep the inverters and breakers off for approximately 3 minutes.
  4. After the 3 minutes have passed, repeat all of the steps above, only in reverse.
  5. Flip the breakers back to the ON position and close the panel. (See Image 4, Object 6.)
  6. Turn the DC Disconnect knobs to the ON position on your inverters. (See Image 3, Objects 3 and 4.)
  7. It might take several hours for all the information to be restored to sunnyportal.com. Please contact Aikyum Solar if above steps do not work and you are unable to resolve your SMA Inverter monitoring issue.
